Tips for creating a festive home for this Ramadan

Jun 6, 2016

Ramadan is a time spent in prayer, reflection, acts of kindness and giving; a spiritual cleanse of the mind, body and soul.

Ramadan is the 9th month of the Islamic calendar. It is considered as a holy month for all Muslims as the very first verses of the Holy Quran were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad during this time and hence this month is the celebration of this great source of spiritual guidance. Ramadan is a special time of reflection as one deepens their self-control, spirituality, and compassion for those less fortunate. It is an act of discipline, proving that we as humans are capable of self-restraint over our passions and basic desires. This state of being also allows those who fast to appreciate the blessings bestowed on them and to feel empathy for those who are not as fortunate. Thus charity is an important part of celebrating this month as well.

Take some time this year to get your home and family to celebrate the beauty of Ramadan. This special time comes but once a year, and now is your chance to embrace it before it’s gone, by decorating your home for the season.

Prepare your home

Get the festive spirit to your home by decorating your home for Ramadan. Decorate your mantle or a shelf with festive banner and a framed print wishing a ‘Ramadan Kareem’. Use banners to adorn your front door as well.

Decorate your home with lights

Adding lights always brings a festive atmosphere. You can bring on the festive spirit to your home by adding decorative lights. Place decorative lanterns around your home that are lit up with electric tea lights, or you could even create your own. Use pretty string lights around your mantle place, or winding up your stair banister.

Create a Ramadan display

You can create a cool Ramadan display in your home by choosing an existing table in your home such as a console table near your front entry. This display can feature all your decorations, such as decorative prints, string lights, countdown posters and treat jars. This area can serve many functions such as a place for Eid presents or to lay out traditional Iftar foods each evening to break the fast.

Eid Countdown

One of the greatest joys of Ramadan is the anticipation for Eid. Get the family excited about the arrival of Eid by keeping track of the days leading up to it with a countdown chart. You can also wrap up your Eid presents early in pretty papers and put them on display during the last 10 days of Ramadan to build anticipation.

Share the love

Sharing this time with others helps get everyone in the festive spirit. Bake some treats and package them up to share with friends, classmates, co-workers and neighbors. Keep it festive at home by keeping extra treats on a platter or cake stand on the counter for drop in guests. Throw an Iftar dinner party or Eid party at your home and send invitations to make the evening feel more special.

Whatever you do, creating your own traditions during Ramadan helps deepens your appreciation for this special month and creates a festive atmosphere that the whole family can enjoy. Also make sure to celebrate Ramadan safely. Ensure that your home insurance is taken care of properly. So we wish everyone a Happy and Prosperous Ramadan
